I cannot recommend this book enough for anyone who has a gender non-conforming child or who is trying to understand what it means to be transgender and what the implications are. Well written, easy to understand, compassionate and pulls no punches.

    Understanding and Dealing with Transgender

    Amos Lassen

There is none a lot written for families about dealing with transgender children–adults have books written about them but as far as I know, Rachel Pepper has written the only book about transgender children and she has written a beauty. The general message to parents has been that they have nothing to apologize for and nothing to be embarrassed about. Many children have issues of gender identity at young ages and we know now that this is not a choice. The book explores the challenges that are faced by many everyday and the authors have done extensive research. We get a thoughtful manual for parents and caregivers written by experts on gender. It is detailed and confronts all of the questions and issues that might be faced. There are examples that are wonderful and the book is empowering. There is such a need for a book like this as we find ourselves in a world where gender lines become more blurred daily. We learn to love the child and we learn of the legal aspects to be dealt with. It is a great introduction to a subject that is extremely controversial. It is come time for us to think about gender than we ever have and realize that gender is part of our innate selves. The book is exactly what is needed and Brill and Pepper do a wonderful job. Even if you do not know someone who is transgender or who has a transgender child, you can still use the book to help you change the way you think.

“The Transgender Child” goes through the current psychological research surrounding raising transgender and gender variant children. Main message: love your child. It then goes through the legal precautions you may consider, as well as how to make sure your child’s school is working hard in his/her best interest. It is clear and straightforward. I loved all of the quotes and messages from transgender children and their families. I think they could have used more research references. The section on the education system was helpful to me, although I think that more training is necessary in addition to this book.

I found this book an excellent introduction to a complicated subject. I think it is an excellent resource for parents of transgender children but also for professionals who may not be very familiar with the topic.
